Australia 485 visa in 2026: age 35, IELTS 6.5, higher fees, who still qualifies

Plenty of students pick Australia for “a few years of work after graduation.” That story used to be broadly true. Into 2025–2026, 485 still exists, but the bridge is narrower: lower age, higher English, steeper fees, and award type matters more than brochure copy.

What 485 is, and is not

Temporary Graduate (Subclass 485) lets you stay and work for a limited period after meeting the study requirement. It is not permanent residence. It is a window for Australian experience, skilled points, or employer sponsorship. When 485 ends without a next visa, the path breaks.

Common streams:

• Post-Higher Education Work: Bachelor, Master, PhD (and other eligible awards).
• Post-Vocational Education Work: associate degree, diploma, trade linked to skilled lists, usually shorter stays.

Age: the number that breaks timelines

For many 485 files, the age cap is 35 or under on the day of lodgement (not graduation day). Lodge a few months after turning 36 and the stream can disappear.

Key exception: Master's by Research and Doctoral awards usually keep a higher age ceiling (2026 sources often cite up to 49). If you start a coursework Master at 33–34, model graduation and lodgement dates before you pay tuition.

Graduate Certificate: no longer a clean 485 pathway in recent updates. Graduate Diploma may still work if the Australian Study Requirement is met (commonly framed as a minimum period of study in Australia, often discussed around two academic years).

English: 6.5 overall, fresher tests

English for 485 moved up: IELTS Academic overall 6.5, no band under 5.5 (or accepted equivalents). Test validity shrank to 12 months before visa lodgement. Sit too early and you retake after graduation.

One Skill Retake appears in cited Home Affairs guidance: fail one skill and retake that skill instead of the full suite, if overall and floors still hold. Do not build the whole plan on retake luck. Build it on a test calendar.

Fees: the post-ceremony surprise

Primary application charges rose sharply from the old AUD 2,300 ballpark. 2026 secondary sources cite index steps around AUD 4,600, then about AUD 5,750 for the primary applicant, depending on the active schedule. Partners and children have separate lines. Regional second streams use different charges.

Higher-education stream processing has improved in recent reports (many finalised within roughly 2–4 months). Faster processing does not help if you miss age or English windows.

Pick the course in year one as if you were picking 485

If 485 is part of the plan:

• Prefer awards inside the stream you need, not only easy offers.
• Watch age at the end of the program.
• Keep an English plan inside the 12-month window.
• Treat regional extension as conditional, not default.
• Do not assume every postgraduate package opens 485.

Mature students (30+) should reverse-engineer the timeline before signing an offer. Research pathways are not for everyone. Sometimes they are the only lawful post-study work option left.

Bottom line

A 2026 485 is not a graduation gift. It is a visa with age, bands, fees, and award rules. Count backward from the lodgement date you want. Counting forward from “I’ll sort it later” is how people finish a degree with a closed door.
